I treated myself to three hours of me-time yesterday, lazily scrolling through the website-formerly-known-as-Twitter looking for words to mute. Muting a word on twitter means posts with that word on it won’t be fed to you anymore, and I love it.
Muting may seem like a small thing, but it is a kind of creation, the way carving marble away is as valid a way to make a sculpture as building clay up. I am trying to expose myself more to what I need to know more about, which means—given attention and time are not infinite—hearing less about other things. If you think about it, a party is just a day in the place you live, with all the non-friends muted. Subtraction is a method in itself.
One learns a lot about oneself when one decides what one does not want to hear—or has heard enough of. What have I blocked? What have I learned?

Election news always leaks through the filter anyway (you can’t live a full life if you go around muting things like “right” or “left”) but I’d like to see less of it. We all know which way California’s voting and I live on a freelancer’s salary, what do any of these people want me to do about the state of the world except be as mad as them?
